The issue of India participation in the Champions Trophy remains unresolved. On the final day of the ICC meetings, the budget for next year scheduled event in Pakistan was approved, but the schedule has not yet been confirmed.
Meanwhile, the council has established a three-member committee to investigate the financial affairs of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The regional qualifying process for the eight available positions in the 2026 mega event has been confirmed, and notices have been issued to the cricket boards of the USA and Chile to improve administrative affairs.
In the 2030 Women T20 World Cup, 16 teams will participate instead of 12. Bangladesh has been given more time to improve conditions for hosting this year scheduled event. According to details, the International Cricket Council's annual meetings concluded yesterday, with the conference and meetings held in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. On the final day, the budget for the Champions Trophy was also approved.
The budget for the showcase event scheduled for February-March next year in Pakistan was jointly prepared by the host board and the ICC. The issue of the Indian team participation remains unresolved. The BCCI does not want to come to Pakistan, citing the excuse of not getting permission from their government, and has been spreading news about this in their domestic media. There was hope that this matter would be discussed in the ICC meetings, but there was no mention of it in the council declaration.
However, the ICC board confirmed the formation of a committee to investigate the financial affairs of the recently held T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. The committee includes three board directors: Roger Tose, Lawson Naidoo, and Imran Khawaja. They will present a report to the board by the end of this year. It is noteworthy that the World Cup matches held in the USA were considered a loss-making deal. Questions were particularly raised about the administrative committee demand for an additional 20 million dollars. Some board members also expressed reservations in the ICC. The board has issued strict notices to the USA and Chile boards to improve administrative affairs, giving both boards 12 months to correct matters according to ICC membership rules and regulations.
The Chief Executive Committee confirmed the regional qualifying for the remaining eight positions in the T20 World Cup 2026. Two teams each from Africa and Europe, one from the Americas, and three joint teams from Asia and the EAP region will be part of the event.
The ICC has formulated a long-term strategy to bring women cricket on par with men cricket. Under this strategy, the number of teams in the 2030 Women T20 World Cup will be increased from 12 to 16. Similarly, the cut-off date for the qualification of the Women T20 World Cup 2026 has been set for October 31, 2024.
Despite the riots in Bangladesh, the host of this year Women T20 World Cup, the ICC has not taken any immediate action but has given the host board more time to improve conditions since the event is still a few months away. The Chief Executive Committee also confirmed the inclusion of Paul Reiffel as a representative of the elite panel in the Men Cricket Committee.
